Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 02

Post by sean.bonner »

Welcome to the second volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 02 runs from November 4th - November 17th. The Volume 02 selection has been made by britstones!

It's a damn classic that you've probably heard before, but it's always fun to revisit the classics (especially this one...)

And the show they selected is....

drumroll......

1991-05-24 - Hengelo, Netherlands
Metropool

This show is freely available in the Hipbase Live Show Archive. The MP3s are in the 'Master-MP3 --> 1991' folder, lossless is in 'Master-Flac --> 1991'.

Here is what Hipbaser britstones had to say about his selection:
I'm going with the Hengelo show from May 24, '91.
A younger band full of energy and songs not played regularly, if at all, for many moons since. She Didn't Know, I'll Believe In You, Three Pistols & Little Bones as well as Blow & NOIS were songs our band played all the time back in the day, and listening to these versions bring it all back to me. Early version of Looking For A Place To Happen, a couple unreleased tunes, a Ron Wood version of a Bob Dylan tune and classic Gord. I hope you enjoy the trip back to the early days.
If you did not sign up to be part of the selection committee, you can still participate! please feel free to listen to the show, and join the discussion in this thread.

The Tragically Hip
May 24, 1991
Metropool
Hengelo, Netherlands

" I remember HengeloЕЕЕ."

Source: SBD > cassette tape

Transfer: First generation cassette > Sound Blaster Live, 24bit/48Khz > Cool Edit Pro >
CD Wave > FLAC *** No DAE ***

Transfer notes:
The source tape is from sixer. For more background on this recording, see his story
below. The tape is in very good condition after more than 12 years. It was played back by
a Technics cassette deck, and recorded through a Sound Blaster Live PCI card at 24 bit,
48Khz. With Cool Edit Pro, I restored clipped sections, removed tape hiss and dc offset. I
also increased the pitch, (speed), very slightly. All processing in Cool Edit Pro was done
at 32 bit resolution. Noise shaping and triangular dithering were used to convert the wav
files to 16 bit, 44.1 kHz. Because this recording comes straight off the sound board, there
is very little audience noise. This is a huge upgrade in sound quality over the seed I
posted on etree a few months back. Also, "Fight" is included in this version. Most version
that I have seen did not include the Fight because of a tape flip. The first track starts mid-
way into the song, see sixer's notes below. It is my opinion that this is the best sounding
version for this show. (tomcat9)

Show notes:
This is one of the best early Hip shows around. Gordie was in "Extreme Gord" mode on
this one! Some of the most unique and clever Gord rants ever. The between song stuff is
classic, too. If you are a Hip fan and don't have this one, GET IT! Includes never released
classics "Crack My Spine" and "Ouch", as well as a rare cover of Bob Dylan's "Seven
Days", as this show was played on Bob Dylan's 50th birthday, and Gordie wanted to pay
his respects. (hipman332001)

Setlist: (77:50)
01. Crack My Spine Like A Whip
02. She Didn't Know
03. Twist My Arm
04. Looking For A Place To Happen
05. Bring It All Back
06. Boots or Hearts
07. I'll Believe In You, Or I'll Be Leaving You Tonight
08. 38 Years Old
09. Trickle Down
10. Cordelia
11. 3 Pistols
12. Fight (part missing from tape flip)
13. Little Bones
14. New Orleans Is Sinking
15. On The Verge
Encore:
16. Ouch!
17. 7 Days
18. Blow At High Dough

Transfer, mastering, and seed by tomcat9.
Show notes and listening test by hipman332001.
Thanks to Sixer for the great tape.

I have included 5 jpegs with this download. Two jpegs are just for fun, and the other 3 are
CD cover artwork from sixer and DAC. **NOTE** The artwork is NOT for this Hengelo
show. It is for the Paradiso Hip show I posted on 1/14/2005. I assume that most people
who download this show also downloaded the Paradiso show. The artwork is very
professional. Check it out! Thanks Sixer and DAC.

Sixer's story posted in the comments of the first seed I posted:

I only can say: WOW. I had no idea this show was in circulation worldwide. I mean:
believe it or not, I taped this show. Here's a little story: I heard the Hip for the first time
in November 1990 and was sold. I really loved them. A few months later a friend of mine
who worked at the club as a cook came to me and said: hey, you wanna cook for the
Tragically hip? And I went: say what??? He told me they were gonna play there and I
could help out in the kitchen and meet the guys, so I did. It was awesome. (We had
vegetarian chili) Earlier that day I met the guys and asked if I could make an audience
recording of the show. Gordon said: That recorder sucks, why don't you use the one
connected to the mixing deck. My mouth fell open. He told me they collected bootlegs of
the Police an the Golden Earring and some other bands. I could tape the show if they
could have a copy. A bit of a shame the engineer forgot to start the tape at the beginning,
I was still backstage when all of a sudden the band decided to start the show. I rushed to
the front of house to start the tape, unfortunately halfway the first song. Also Fight is
missing from this tape, it was played between Three pistols and Little bones, but during
that song the tape had to be switched. On my copy of the tape it's still there (cut), but I
guess somewhere in the line of traders it got lost. Anyway, after the show Gordon and the
guys (including me) listened to the tape in the dressing room and we had a blast. They
wanted to have the tape and promised me a copy if I could show them a Record shop
where they could buy bootlegs (I happened to know that shop). So the next day (they had
2 days of, I guess) I met the guys again in the city of Hengelo and took them to a little
place called Pop-eye. They loved it. At the time law-enforcement didn't work as well and
boots were all over the place. Gordon smiled and gave me a copy of the tape they made
in the touring bus: "as promised" he said. Well, I guess that's most of the story. My tape
has been played so much I keep it in the faults, so I'm happy to have this one on cd now.

Thanks a lot and hope to enjoy a lot more of the hip.

Hope everyone enjoys! Volume 03 is coming soon... !

Gordie was quite vocal in between songs indeed- many anal references lol - !! His voice was very sharp that night too!!
The 1st time they ever played Looking For A Place To Happen live - his fascination with "Hengelo"
38 years old intro - "true story about all those people who never existed" lol
solid version of Cordelia then picking up the energy level with Three Pistols & Little Bones
nice Birthday wishes for Dave Powell in NOIS (my favorite song of the show) complete with his incest rant
Amazing rockin' On The Verge - one of the best ever versions of that too!!
great Dylan tribute then great Blow finish!!

Isn't this the show where the van got lost on route to the venue and that is why the boys ended up drinking so much on the way? And why Gord is so drunk and lyrically free during the show?

Also. Looking For a Place to happen: I have always liked these early lyrics but you can just tell the flow is off compared to how it ended up on the album.

I think this is a show that many of us have heard before (that's a compliment to the selection of it).

I found She didn't know and Twist my arm to be stand outs for me, the band sounded really on for those. Gord sounds great throughout and is very entertaining. I totally agree with what Tthip said about Looking for a Place to Happen.

I heard that about this show as well.

But let's be honest... I'm sure they are just saying he was 'drunk'. The boys were in their twenties in the Netherlands for the first time... what do you think they really got up to :p

Well f**k, looks like I need to get my shit together and rock this within the next two days. Maybe a two week turn around is a little too frequent.... oh well. Ponderings for after we do this 'first edition'.

Well that was the most X-Rated version of New Orleans Is Sinking I've ever heard.

A precursor to Pigeon Camera I would say.

Gordie... writing about incest since before Game of Thrones made it cool.

So much to love about this show:

Of all the "Hengelo" moments. My fav is the tilsonburg-esque "my back still aches when I sing it slow"

After boots or hearts "Ahhhh ill get it right one of these days"

"I believe I can make money doin it" before ill believe in you. Safe to say what Gord believed, he achieved.

Trickle down ... such an underrated track if you ask me.

As someone who was critical of "screamo gord" in years past, I Love the screamo chorus intro to fight. Sad part of it was cut.

Does dave powell know his 29th birthday is immortalized in this beastly NOIS ? I hope so.

Last but not least - sounded like they were going to close with All Canadian Surf Club but it a fan requested "Blow me?" Fast forward 25 years and that fans request may be the bands top closer.

Loved my listens of this gem during the week, thanks britstones. It had been awhile since I listened to pre-1995 recordings. Looking forward to next installment

So I did find some time to rock this classic show. A+ sound quality and a great setlist with some gems that dropped off from the rotation.

Possibly the heaviest On The Verge outro I've ever heard.

I've always loved Ouch. That bassline is so damn catchy. Who decided to leave this off Road Apples?! Jeesh

Is 'I'll Believe In You' a Sinclair song? That's the only explanation I can muster up as to why this was dropped from setlists. What a killer tune. Just as rockin' as their bluesy classics Little Bones and NOIS if you ask me!

Was great to revisit this show and hear it again. Been a few years since I listened to it all the way through.

I've never heard this Bob Dylan song outside of this bootleg (even the original). Upon some research, the tune is from 'The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991', which would have been released officially for the first time only two months prior to the show (Although the song has existed since at least 1976).

Looks like Pigeon Camera was a WIP at the time of this show, as lots of lyrical and themes in the song are teased in this version of New Orleans Is Sinking.

What else can be said that hasn't been said about this show before?

10/10 would rock again.
