Bootleg Club - Second Edition coming Sept. 2017

Hello Hipbase!

Seeing as we are moving onto August already, I figured I would start a thread to discuss what we should do for the bootleg club come September.

After some tinkering during the first edition, I'm looking for feedback from you guys. What worked? What didn't work?
Most importantly however...

How should we proceed with edition 2?

This is just an idea, but how would everyone feel if we didn't simply select a show, but rather each participant gets assigned a random year, and your selection has to be from the year you were assigned?

I'm also open to any other ideas, would love some feedback.

Have a great rest of your summer, Hippies!

pick a couple of shows from each tour (year?), starting at the beginning, and then people can discuss which one they enjoyed the most?

I don't have any suggestions at this point and am open to whatever format option is decided. I do love discovering shows that are new to me and find that the audio quality can really affect my enjoyment of said show.

I like this idea. Maybe we can get people to vote for one show from each album era (Ex: 1985-1988 - EP Years, 1989-1990 - Up To Here, etc.), and whatever shows get the most vote each album era can be our Bootleg of the Month? (If there's a tie in the votes, maybe run a poll or run a random selection generator?)

Apparently some posts are being deleted (not by mods, but through a system error I am guessing?)

Was told that there were some suggestions that were deleted or disappeared after a few minutes...

Sorry gang. I have informed Lance of the issue...

Anyways, if you could repost the feedback, would be appreciated!

I think my post was one that disappeared. It was incredibly eloquent and well thought out, I swear.

Off the top of my head I said something along the following lines:

What I am most interested in is discovering shows that are not as well known as others. While there are many legendary boots out there, I feel hearing shows we are less likely to have heard previously could help to fuel discussion and interest.

I like the idea of selecting a show from each year and even going chronologically. In some cases in may make sense to select shows from different legs of a tour in the same year, however I acknowledge this may stretch this edition of the bootleg club into a year or two undertaking. I also suspect this will require a decent bit of prep work, in selecting shows that have solid audio quality. I'm not opposed to using some form of lottery or random generator to pick a show. I'm also happy to volunteer Sean to pick the shows for us :)

In my opinion what will make this the most successful is discussion on the forum for each show. I originally thought a standard set of questions could work in generating chatter, but have since changed my mind as this could get tiresome or repetitive.

Using each show as a bit of a 'hip' history lesson, or redux of the 'museum after dark' approach could help to do this. Are there references to current affairs in rants, what sounds or themes or lyrics are the band test-driving, what else was going on around the band at the time of the show(ARA tour, Gord prepping Coke Machine Glow, non album tours etc). I guess I hope we can try and do a deep dive on these, stir up some nostalgic feelings of what it was like on the henhouse tour hearing those songs live for the first time or referencing tour stats to try and guess why a song may have shown up on a setlist for the first time in ages, why some songs seem to always get played in certain cities (I feel like Thugs always gets played in Colorado). I think a lot of this info is out there and having a number of people pull this together and hypothesize could be a lot of fun.

I like this idea - I used to have a ton of bootlegs (active collector until 2002 with about 150 shows) so I think I have a good handle on shows up to M@W.

However, family, work, etc got in the way and I've only listened to a few shows from IVL -> NFPA and would love to go through some of the great shows from those tours.

Having said that, I'm in for V2!
