Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: February 2018

Post by sean.bonner »

New month means new show!

For February, we tread into the waters of Trouble at the Henhouse.

This month's selection is brought to you by Hipbaser kieffer!
kieffer wrote:I've settled on the following show: 1996-08-17 - Cleveland, Ohio.

http://hipfans.com/SeansVault/1996-08-1 ... 20Ohio.zip

I chose this show simply because it was one I hadn't heard before and seemed interesting.

Some highlights from this show include:

"Some kids from grade 6 wrote the Hip a letter, asking
us what "Daredevil" was about, this is called "Gift Shop".
This is sort of what we wrote them back, because you can't
neglect a grade sixer. If you do, you ain't worth shit."

The show includes a 12 minute version of 100th that has snippets of Poets, Radio Show and possibly others I didn't pick up on during my first listen. NOIS also includes a very early version of Escape.
Closing out the main set with Put it Off was also something I don't think I've heard before.

Springtime In Vienna
Fully Completely
Gift Shop
Grace, Too
Butts Wigglin
Opiated
700 Ft. Ceiling
Flamenco
At The Hundredth Meridian
Don't Wake Daddy
Courage (for Hugh Maclennan)
Ahead By A Century
New Orleans Is Sinking
Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
The Wherewithal
Put It Off

Encore
Nautical Disaster
Little Bones
Another great soundboard show! I did state in the last month's bootleg club that the Halifax 95 version of Opiated may be the best available, however I may need to wipe some egg off of my face with this version...

Overall fantastic show and quality - loving these shows not sure why I didn't pay attention Bootleg Show of the Month threads sooner.

Couple of quick thoughts:

NOIS - sounds like the cut to Escape was edited as it is very abrupt curious to know how long NOIS was live that night given the 12 min 100th.

Put it Off - One of my favourite songs but not one I have ever gone out of my way to find live versions of. Curious if the album/artist substitution was common during this tour for the "Played Love Tara by Eric's Trip..." line. Really enjoyed the Downward Spiral by NIN substitution in this version.

I don't think so... I think their transition game from NOIS -> Stereo was just tight and on point by autumn 96.

Can't go wrong opening with Gord's favourite Hip song; I think Sprintime is a solid opener; starts with a simple riff and then builds to some great power chords to drive the song forward.

I was thinking as I was watching That Night In Toronto on the weekend, that Fully is a great second song; it doesn't seem to matter what the opener is, Fully just seems to slide effortlessly into slot two.

Gift Shop usually suffers from not capturing the magic of the studio but I think they come close here; Rob's work at the end of this is wonderful.

Grace is wonderful as always although now it seems strange to see it somewhere other than opener, mainset closer or somewhere in the encore as it served so well as an opener so many times.

Butts is okay but certainly a bit of a let down after the first four songs.

Opiated is probably the finest live version I've ever heard; loved lost month's but this one is even better I think. They are very tight through this and it's just a monster.

700 starts big and powerful and just keeps getting better; great background vocals too.

Flamenco is a wonderful song and this is a great version; love the guitar tone.

No time to make it through 100th right now; more later.

I was at that show in Cleveland. It was an awesome show. Long drive back to Sarnia though.

100th - incredible! There is so much in there and I loved the days when 100th had extended jams with new ideas going everywhere

Daddy - really, really good

Courage - some good ranting and the guitar tone is just about perfect

ABAC - good version and it sounds even this early on, Rob was playing around with the song. Nothing major but some extra little tidbits

NOIS - doesn't seem too inspired; just going through the motions to get to Stereo. Which is awesome and it's been so long since I've listened to it, it felt like being transported back 20 years. When they come back it seems like there's more than just playing and Rob has a great outro.

The jam at the end of Butts Wigglin is gold!

Went back and listened to the jam; must have zoned out the first time. You're right, it's fantastic!

Relistened to this last night.

That run of Butts Wigglin -> Opiated -> 700 Ft. Ceiling -> Flamenco is fucking dynamite.

However, after careful review, I can concretely say Halifax 95 Opiated > Cleveland 96 Opiated (close one though!)

Butts Wigglin' and Put It Off have been my highlights here.

This is one hell of a show!! Epic!!
It has everything you could hope for and more.
A rollercoaster ride from opening note to close with so many incredible versions.
Butts was so awesome, Opiated is the best ever and 700' Ceiling just boils over.
That Meridian gives me chills, Daddy is one of the best versions too and always a top 3 for me is Locked in The Trunk, the intro about " don't throw brassieres at the monkeys, it just makes them crazy" is pure Gord at his best.
The Wherewithal (for Gerald Ford lol) rocked as always with Robbie just killing it!!
I love Put it Off so much live and this one rates right up there for me, with Robbie just wailing out it is easy to gloss over how great a rhythm section Gordon and Johnnie are but this whole show they just drove the band to the highest.
The Nautical was incredible, how I wish I knew the song he is ranting (only the versions with Claire were better for me)
Great choice kieffer!!

A few more thoughts on this show.

Springtime - absolutely mammoth version of this song!
Fully - as gsmacleod said - this song slides perfectly into the second slot on any setlist.
Giftshop - the daredevil intro is hilarious, I wonder if Gord forgot what song was next up
Grace - hard to really say anything about this song live that hasn't been said time and time again
Butts - I don't think I've heard this on many sets, it sounds a bit sped up at the beginning which has a cool effect, I feel as though my headphones don't do justice to the jam at the end
Opiated - incredible
700ft - Love hearing Paul's backing vocals on this one

Flamenco - an almost perfect version of this song, however if I could have Kate on backing vocals on every live version of this song that would be my preference :)
100th - with this being on of the most frequently played live songs in their repertoire, they must love playing it. Sure sounds like there were lots of different lyrics for Poets Gord was refining.
Daddy - "the best song you can sing from a friend to a friend"
Courage - Gord ripping on the guys for pushing the girls from the front of the stage :)
ABAC - solid as always

NOIS - Wish the band would have continued with the extended versions of this song into the 2000's - really kept the song fresh
Locked - a dark and brooding version!!!
Wherewithal - might be one of the hardest hitting songs from this show
Put it off - I think I mentioned this above, but I don't recall seeing many (if any other shows) where this was the closer of a main set. "I played the downward spiral, by Nine Inch Nails on the day that you were born." I wish I could have heard them perform this one live!

Nautical - I don't think I've ever heard a version of this song that wasn't awesome
Little Bones - never a bad song to close
