Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: December 2018

Post by sean.bonner »

Is this thing still on?

Looks like it is!

Oh how I am dreading four weeks of the same twenty Christmas songs cycled through by different artists over and over and over again. I guess we can all get reprieve with our selection for December 2018! With December, we move onto a show from the We Are The Same tour. This month's selection is brought to you by Hipbaser kieffer.
I'm going with 2009-04-27 - Kitchener, Ontario

I was in the crowd for this one and I believe this was the first ‘official’ show of the 2009 ‘We are the Same’ Tour. The band did play a warm up gig a few nights earlier at the Danforth in Toronto, but if my memory serves me correctly, I avoided looking at the setlist from that show.
This tour took a slightly different approach compared to a number of the previous ones. Instead of playing arenas, the band did multi-night shows in smaller venues across the country and this show didn't just kick off the tour, but kicked off the first of three nights at Centre in the Square in Kitchener. The shows were billed as an ‘evening with tour’. Jim Bryson toured with the band playing keys which added a different element to a number of songs. This tour also had the hip playing a small three song acoustic set after an intermission.

I was fortunate enough to make it to all three Kitchener shows and as previously mentioned, the excitement of the show being at the beginning of the tour meant there were many questions going through my mind, most importantly, what gems might show up on some of these setlists.

I think what makes this show stand out is as much for what wasn’t played. Not many sets lack all of New Orleans, Blow, ABAC, Grace, Fully, M@W and BobC. It also pulled out rarities such as the Bear, Makeshift, Tiger and Puttin' down. This song was also heavy on the 'new' album, with 8 of 12 songs from WATS being played.

This tour had Gord really breaking the fourth wall, interacting a lot with the audience, climbing into the crowd and having fans sing into the microphone. If anyone is looking for more listening, I can’t say enough about the 3 night run of shows in Kitchener and highly recommend checking the other two out.

"Holy fucking shit"

This is rocking, but also due the setlist, it makes me feel like they decided to tease the tour this night. There may not be no dress rehearsals in one life, but there may be dress rehearsal's in one's life. However they didn't take the night off, rather they took the night to swim. Not to me. Not to him. SWIM

The lack of "Yer Favourites" is fucking staggering.

As Makeshift As We Are into Inevitability of Death into Yawning Or Snarling.

No other setlist I think has ever done that.

Clearly after 3 super rare songs like that, BobC, ABAC or Couarge is next, right...?

I certainly think the band tended to test drive a number of songs early in tours to see what was working and what wasn't. Especially with new tracks - it is likely a bit more about determining audience reaction possibly

This is a great recording and a heck of a show. Fantastic setlist, the only thing flaw I noticed is that Wheat Kings slows it down. I don't know if its me, and my over exposure to the song, but it seemed a bit lifeless to me.

I was never too exited to see Wheat Kings on a setlist tbh, but I think it fits in nice in the acoustic set.
