The House of Blues

Post by AngeliqueDemonet »

Wow. The show was bombin'. ^_^ I went with my ex-boyfriend, whom I had introduced to the Hip. He was most definetely a newbie. The House of Blues is an awesome place. Very close intimate environment, come in and stand or sit wherever you want. When we got there, we were some of the first. We stood around away from the stage for a while, and chatted, and out came the band at nine. Actually, it wasn't the band at all, but Wayne, and neither of us had ever seen the Hip (poor deprived children that we are), so we immediately began freaking out. After the band began to play, we realized it wasn't them, and were very embarrassed. Wayne had a wonderful sound, some of their songs having a bit of a country twang. The band was originally from Montgomery Alabama, if memory serves, and were absolutely awesome! We eased up to the edge, the far right, and stood in front of the guitarrist. He was adament about making eye contact with the audience, and would glance up and laugh, and shake his head, and was excellent at creating a bit of a rapport with the audience. The little details, like making eye contact with members of the audience, and even the muppet "animal" sitting in front of the drums made this band one of the best opening acts i have ever seen. They played through forty five minutes, bluesy and sweet. When they left, we stood and chatted while the stagehands fixed up the stage and got it ready for the Hip. The girl beside me was a New Kids on the Block fan, and had only heard of the Hip through her boyfriend, whom she had brought. She was from Charlotte, and he was from close to the Canadian border. I was from past Asheville, and my ex is from Lumberton, NC. Alot of the people there were from Canada, true Hip followers. The Tragically Hip came out and the crowd went wild! One chick with a camera was standing trying to take pictures, so I tapped her on the shoulder and let her in beside me. She was an interesting character, and had been on a date with the drummer earlier that day. She was from Toronto, and it was her 27th birthday. The music was beyond AWESOME. The atmosphere rocked. The band made eye contact and was able to maintain a rapport with the audience. Gord was absolutely drenched by the end of the second song. The movement helped to get the audience all riled up. At one point a fan threw a Canadian flag up on stage, so Gord made reference to it. The stage list went as follows:
Use
Music
New Orleans
Grace
Lake Fever
Are You Ready
Courage
Silver Jet
Daredevil
Goodlife
Poets
Gift Shop
Dark Canuck
Hundredth Meridian
Dire Wolf
ABAC
Bones ****

****OOOO... here's where it started to get interesting. Two drunk gentlemen (loosely used) climbed up on stage at the end of this song, one of them turning and attempting to crowd surf (this may have worked. I was too short to see!), and the other trying to actually approach the band. The band calmly walked off stage, as one of the roadies and a security guard escorted the only vaguely conscious man off of the stage. Security came in and stood between the audience and the stage, where until now, there had been no real need for them to be. After making sure security was in place, the band came back out and picked up where they left off, resuming the show with the song "wheat kings"

Back to the good stuff.

Wheat Kings (I think it was this song where Gord actually pointed at me and sang towards me! Ah, I could have fainted!!!)
Tore Up (I'm not sure, but I think the girl beside us said that this was the song they were playing for her for her birthday. Whichever song it was, they pointed at her and told her it was for her birthday, so I'm inclined to believe her. *LOL*)
Blow at High Dough

At the end of the show (I'm told it was about midnight), we waited around, but were chased off by pushy security guards. On our way out, we met the guitarrist from Wayne (and I got to find out that his wife and I have the same name!). We went on out, and drove around a little, and a most likely slightly intoxicated fellow motioned for us to drive past him, then faked us out by acting like he was jumping in front of the truck. Ah, what entertaining people were around! And such a wide variety, too! I sort of wanted to wait around for a while, but we were both tired, so we didn't actually get to talk to the band, but we still had a ball all around. That's all I can think of right now. ^_^

Great review. Sorry I missed them.
We unfortunately missed out on The House of Blues show a few years back. We and my wife (at the time she wasn't, but I proposed to her on the beach that vacation) went there for a week and decided to go to that House of Blues for dinner one night. Come to find out that they were playing there two days after we were scheduled to leave. I was sooooo pissed. :x Did everything I could to stay a little longer, but as we all know, work does come a callin' and the money does run out!

Cheers!

Myrtle Beach, SC- One of the better Hip shows I've seen.... Grew up in Watertown, NY. Near the Canadian border town of Kingston, Ontario. Used to go up there and see the Hip play in little bars in the early 90's. They have always rocked the house. I've seen them many times in Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston Salem. But, this House of Blues show was exceptional. October at the beach- & the Hip are playing too! A northerner's treat. The reviewer previous to me stated "The girl beside me was a New Kids on the Block fan, and had only heard of the Hip through her boyfriend, whom she had brought. She was from Charlotte, and he was from close to the Canadian border. " These were friends of ours that we were at the show with. Lots of us from H2Otown moved to Charlotte after graduation. I'll have to ask about the NKOTB reference... The night continued well into the morning at the many bars nearby- great show, great time, great people! :thumb:
