Hipbase Bootleg Show of the Month: November 2018

Post by sean.bonner »

With Hipbase rumoured to be saved, we are back! And if not... here's to one more!

We move onto World Container... and would you look at that? My turn to pick.

2006-11-09 - Montreal, Quebec - Metropolis

To celebrate World Container, I decided to pick a show with a very World Container heavy setlist. I was at this show! Fantastic memories. Will elaborate later.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this show. I was able to catch a number of shows on this tour. I believe they started with a few multi-night shows in a few cities - with MTL being one of them.

While I never saw them perform in Montreal, I think they greatly enjoyed playing that town (who wouldn't) and I felt you could truly sense that on this recording.

As I typically do, I went into this show without looking at the setlist and here are random thoughts on each track.

t01 - announcement
t02 - Lonely End Of The Rink - This song works well as an opener, like really well. It's amazing how many songs these guys have that are perfect openers
t03 - New Orleans Is Sinking - I liked seeing this one show up early in the night, likely helped to get the energy flowing in the room
t04 - In View - Huge fan of this song, maybe I was distracted, but this version fell a bit flat
t05 - Don't Wake Daddy - this song could have been on every setlist they ever played and I still wouldn't have enough of this live
t06 - The Drop-Off - this song was rockin' - I think this is a lyrical masterpiece
t07 - Ahead By A Century - fun version, it felt a bit sped up
t08 - Fly - After Potsie's in depth look at this song I gave it extra attention - decent version of a song I wish could have been more
t09 - Poets - I almost can't imagine this song without the 'bring out your dead' and the 'swim' ad-libs
t10 - Fiddler's Green - I think this was the first tour this song started appearing on. Hearing the crowd's reaction as they recognize the song sent shivers down my spine
t11 - World Container - no thanks
t12 - Luv [sic] - pleasant surprise - I'm sure this would be a song that would make our heads explode if it showed up on any other tour's setlist
t13 - At The Hundredth Meridian - great transition in to this song
t14 - It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken - I can never decide if I like or dislike this on setlists - this version certainly works
t15 - Kids Don't Get It - I enjoy the way this song crashes into the first chorus
t16 - Grace, Too - slightly different into?? Generally, I feel like the band is having fun anytime they mix things up
t17 - Wheat Kings - this is an incredible song, but if I have my choice, it is not showing up on a setlist of a show I'm at
t18 - Yer Not The Ocean - didn't expect this one after Wheat Kings
t19 - Locked In The Trunk Of A Car - fun intro, for a great song
t20 - Family Band - I can certainly dig this as the closer to the main set
t21 - **encore break**
t22 - Escape Is At Hand For The Travellin' Man - Another unexpected surprise
t23 - Pretend - ugh, don't care for this one at all
t24 - On The Verge - I think this is the perfect closer

All in all this is a great show - nice change of pace in terms of setlist with a focus on the new material. Thanks for sharing!

I don't even need to listen to this to comment, since I was there, and I've listened to the bootleg approximately a billion times since. A few comments:

1) I'm relatively certain a few members of the band's family were there, since there were a few 'VIPs' in the boxes at the metropolis that the band played to a few times.
2) I loved how they alternated an old song with a new song for most of the set.
3) I can't recall if I knew that they'd played fiddler's green in Calgary a few days before this, but when they broke into it, it almost broke my brain trying to process what was happening.
4) Gord letting the crowd sing most of grace too was something I'd never seen them do before. "You wanna sing? GO AHEAD AND SING!"
5) His antics during the hundredth meridian jam was at their peak here...he was playing a cop (?) in a shootout, using (amongst other things) paul and the drum riser as cover.
6) Locked in the trunk of a car is far and away my favourite hip and I'd seen them probably 10 times before this, and had always missed locked by 1 night at least 3-4 times, so I was getting antsy. After yer not the ocean, they started that riff, which I initially thought was going to be springtime in Vienna (which, meh, I'd seen a bunch already). But then Gord said "this might be the only song ever dedicated to Dostoyevsky, but this is for Dostoyevsky. This is called Locked. In the trunk. Of a car." I swear to god, my head almost hit the ceiling I jumped so high.*** (He's a prospect for the Canadiens. Playing in Peoria. Looking to coach, when his playing days are through.") Probably one of the 5 happiest moments I've ever had at a concert.
7) On the verge was a pleasant surprise to end the show.
8) Aside from maybe one of the 'evening with...' shows and the 2016 Ottawa show, my favourite show I ever saw them do.

***in reality, it was probably more like the leap phil mickelson did when he won his first masters. In other words, not that high.

This video enhances this version ten fold, IMO!

What kind of idiotic, drunk, hyper d-bag would yell "Luv (sic)!" at Gordie when he's trying to introduce the song?

I am pretty sure that is me...

My first quick listen;
Lonely and NOIS are a great rocking one.two punch to start the show.
The intro to In View sounds better here than what i remember the first few times I heard it live.
I really like the sound of this recording!
More later

I 'researched' several World Container shows for this selection, but I always seemed to keep coming back to either this one, or Night #2.

Do you guys realize how many 2006-2007 shows were recorded? I put time into several, and I still feel like I've only scratched the surface.
