Why hasn't anybody posted a review yet?

Ok, setlist went something like this:

-Scar
-Grace
-Summer
-Poets
-Good Life
-Joe
then, not in order
-Springtime
-Bobcaygeon
-Nashville
-Courage
-Hundredth Meridian
-Meanstreak
-Gus
-Fully
-M@W

Encore 1:
-Wheat Kings
-Makeshift
-N.O. Sinking

Encore 2:
-Ahead By a Century
-Little Bones

I'm surprised Gord made no reference to that plane that was flying overhead. If anyone remembers Bluesfest 2 years ago, it was the same banner (XXX PORN).

The venue seemed to be set up much better this time around. There were still way too many people (newspaper estimates 30,000), but more space to move around. The sound was very good for an outside concert. The new music had the crowd bouncing at certain points, shouldn't be too long before a lot of this new stuff becomes crowd favorites. I don't know where Ballroom was though, and I was waiting for that song. Only 1 song from IVL, only 1 song from M@W.

One note: I could've sworn I was going to hear Use it Up for the second encore. Remember the entrance music you'd always hear as the band came up on the stage, then went into Use it Up? Well, it was that music, but they went into a kick ass version of Ahead By A Century.

Two note: Thanks to that girl in the white top(or lack there of) who entertained the guys in the crowd for those few memorable seconds as we all anticipated the band to hit the stage.

Three note: Anyone know who that band was that played right before the Hip? They weren't scheduled to play, and I notice the band before them went on early to make room. Also, the singer thanked the Hip for getting them onstage.

There's also a HUGE picture of Mr. Downie in today's issue of the Ottawa Citizen.

I thought the concert was really good. I've found in the past couple of shows I've seen, it seemed that Gord was just 'going through the motions'. Tonight however, it seemed like he was REALLY into to it.

Thought the classics they picked were good ones. Would have liked a few more of the newer songs though.

BTW, after Gord picked the gum off the bottom of his shoe at the start of his set, did he put it in his mouth?? Could have sworn he did.

Fireworks was in there too.

It was a great show: venue was better set up than last time. Although without even trying, I still managed to walk in without needing to show my ticket at all... I brought that up with one of the staff.

Gord was really on fire, even on the slow songs he couldn't stop bouncing around. He made a comment like "I provide the content. You shut the hell up!" - I hope the obnoxious people in crowd who like to sing (scream) the lyrics and drown out the show got the hint. Although I think Gord was actually talking to the microphone stand which was giving him some trouble. A stagehand ran on stage and replaced it or made an adjustment. He also went into a rant later about a "microphone and a microphone stand" as he fought with the the stand. Apparently this is a continuation of what he did in Toronto on July 1. It was hilarious.

As for the setlist, it sounded more like this could have been a Phantom Power tour show. Only the bare minimum from the new album, almost nothing from IVL or M@W. I was expecting more from IBE based on reading some setlists from recent shows. It was still great to hear the classics though, delivered with a lot of energy.

I think Ottawa was lucky in that the band had 10 days off since the last show (July 1 in Toronto) so they were really ready to go. It's not like they've been playing for 2 weeks straight. I thought double encores were reserved for Toronto :) It felt as if they would have played a triple encore if they could but there was probably a noise bylaw or something.

Other observation: it's a sign of the times when "Wheat Kings" brings out everyone's lighters. And the non-smokers turn on their bright-blue cell phone display lights!

Anyway, this is definetely the most 'alive' I have seen the Hip in the last few years. I think people are in for a treat this summer.

I've been seeing shows since the TATH tour and doubel-encores were common until the IVL tour which seemed to be 17 song main sets + three song encores.

slightly off-topic, but I was witness to a triple encore at Pine Knob during the M@W tour.

Everything was in place for a triple encore last night. It doesn't happen too often, but every once in a while, you can feel it's right. There is a noise by law in Ottawa, I believe it is 11:00pm. The crowd wasn't ready to leave, and was very well behaved. Plus the guys said it was somewhat of a homecoming for them. It was a different atmosphere last night, one that I hope continues for many shows to come.

Hey everybody,

Just got back from an extended weekend in Ottawa. First, the setlist (as close as I can remember--all the songs are present & accounted for, if not quite in order):

Vaccination Scar
Grace, Too
Summer is Killing Us
Poets
It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
Goodnight Josephine
Courage
Gus (in order up to this point)
Bobcaygeon
Fireworks
It Can't Be Nashville Every Night
Springtime in Vienna
At the Hundredth Meridian
Mean Streak
Fully Completely
Nautical Disaster
Heaven is a Better Place Today
My Music at Work
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wheat Kings
As Makeshift as We Are
New Orleans is Sinking
===============================================
Ahead by a Century
Little Bones

I think this is accurate; might be a few discrepencies from "Bobcaygeon" through "Nautical Disaster", but all the songs are there.

This was my eight time seeing the Hip, and in terms of the actual performance I'd rank it #1 with a bullet. The setlist disappointed me; between the second Mod Club show and six other Hip concerts I'd heard each and every one of these songs live at least once (still heard "Music at Work" every show I've seen and "Grace", "Poets" and "Courage" at seven of them). I think, however, that this is more a reflection of me as a fan than on the band itself. For the casual fans, this was the perfect song selection...and to be honest, as much as I'd rather hear rarer old songs than having to hear "Springtime in Vienna" yet again, I'm not gonna complain too loudly when the songs are making everybody else so happy.

As for the performance...well, Gord was on fire. The rest of the band was in fine form, as well, but Mr. Downie seemed hell-bent on conquering every square inch of Festival Plaza or dying in the attempt. "Grace, Too" was the unmitigated highlight of the show; it was by far and away the best version I've ever heard, and you seriously can't wait to hear it. Awesome "Meridian", too--great rant re. the microphone. The new stuff sounded even better than it did at the Mod Club, with "Josephine" and "Nashville" the personal highlights.

There was a good vibe all night, despite the crowdsurfing (there was *lots* of crowd surfing...go figure). There were reportedly 30,000 people there, which is the most who've ever attended a Bluesfest performance. So yeah...wicked show; can't wait for the rest of the tour and to see this band performing at its peak a few more times. :)

Hey Everyone!!
whooo weeee!!! WOW! I gotta say age just doesn't matter! My husband and I just celebrated our 15th anniversary and have been going to HIP shows since '86 (the year we met) at our beloved (long gone) Lakeview Manor, here in Kingston, BUT we have to say THANK YOU OTTAWA! The band was definately ON FIRE! We were very lucky to be front row, squished up against the metal barrier and lovin every second of the "LIVE" sound. As many times before, we've listened to the CD and thought, "ya OK" but now after seeing the "LIVE" show, we can't get enough of the CD!
Hope our little adopted buddy (11 yr old Steve) made it home safe and sound (Robbie B gave him his guitar pick to treasure lifelong)!
Can't wait for the next show!!

Hi!
Well i'm not sure if this counts as a show or not! But i was up in Kanata for my GF's god-childs first birthday. Well it was saturday, so i didn't have any plans for bluesfest. Well saturday night we were gonna hit a bar in Ottawa, not sure were though. So the gf and myself decided to get a hotel room. By luck we called the Lord Elgin hotel and they had room. So as wel pull into the front enterence for valet, i turn off my loud stereo (hip) and once the car is off i hear poets. I have to double look at my stereo to make sure its off, and it is..... As we get out, i ask the gf whats over there, cause that's the hip, and live......She is like it must be bluesfest......So as the gf goes in to check in, i stay outside bobbing my head to poets on the sidewalk (i got SOME dirtry looks from people) LOL.
So my gf tells me after, when she had to give the clerk my licence plate, and he is like, ohhhh! hip fan, going to the concert? My gf is like, no it's my bf's, he is the fan. The clerk then searches his database so we can have a room overlooking the show. So we get to our 8th fllor room (very nice hotel, for the record) i can see Gord's white shirt, and Robby's red pants. but the music was very clear... It was still awsome....... Well after 100th meridian i was hungry, so we decided to walk downstown. It was so amazing walking down the streets of Ottawa, while the hip's music is so loud you can still hear it.

It was awsome to hear them again......
:)
