This was by far the best of the 4 shows we saw....for us. It was the right combination of things. It was a beautiful day. 76 degrees in April! We got to the show early. Hung out and met tons of new people (hip fans) and with people we had previously met at shows. The parking lot and the buses were in the same spot so we were there when one of them arrived. The other was already there and Henry (CottonTech) was there in one of the trailers so we were able to give him his pictures. We chatted for awhile. Then Johnny and Paul got off the bus and Bob went and got Johnny to sign the poster he got in Burlington. Johnny drew a drum on it. Pretty cool! When they went in for sound check I was able to get Gord Sinclair to sign my WheatKings Jersey. (the last one I needed) Bob asked Gord if he had written the set list yet. Gord said no. Bob told him how this friend of ours (Sonny) who goes to shows with us was bringing a newbie to the show that night. They play in a band together and they play a couple Hip tunes. Could they maybe play them....Wheatkings and Locked. Gord said he didn't know about Wheatkings but thought they could work in Locked. Bob still needed Gord Downie to sing his poster. Gord went straight in for sound check and it was obvious he didn't want to be bothered and everyone respected that. When sound check got done he didn't come out with the other guys. I kept saying he probably went out the front. Sure enough...quite some time later and when Bob had gone to the car, here comes Gord D around the corner of the building. Luckily Bob left the poster with me! :) Gord D came right over to us and signed everyone's stuff. After that we left for awhile and wandered the boardwalk and kept running into Paul. We went and had some dinner and then met some other hip friends again who were at another place so we went over there and we see Paul again waiting to have dinner. We left to head to the show and Paul had just gotten served his dinner. I headed up front once we got to the venue to check things out and we could get quite close on Paul’s side. We ended up second row right in front of Paul. He looked up and saw us and just kind of laughed. We had great interaction with him all night. We were thrilled and surprised when they played the Wheatkings since Gord S indicted he didn’t think that would happen. I had a feeling they were going to save LOCKED for the ending. We really missed Mark at the shows…but can sure understand getting burnt out on the road. Not sure if anyone taped this show or not. I didn’t see any mikes in the crowd. It was sure great to meet so many nice people…Melissa and Nick, Murray and his gang, Trina and her man with the big hands. ;) And seeing all the other people we’ve met along the way on our HipTrips…Rhonda and Dwight, Jeff, Chris, Brian and Jill. And of course all the other people whose names escape me!!

Peace…

What a BLAST!!!
First road trip to see the band - came down from Toronto.
That was my fourth show...and the smallest venue yet! It is soooo much more fun to be so close to the stage. Wife and I were dancing up a storm.
The boys put on a great show once again....I don't know how they can keep it so real night after night on a tour like this. I too saw Paul walking around on Ocean Boulevard at 7:45pm looking for a bite to eat! They can't do that in any Canadian city...they would be mobbed. I bet they like the relative obscurity that some of these smaller gigs offer.
My wife freaked when they played her favourite - Dire Wolf. She almost went up to Paul behind the Casino in the afternoon to put in her request but chickened out. Played my favourite - Locked In The Trunk!!
Met some great guys/girls from Halifax and Waterville before the show!
I hope that the Hip keep playing for a long time yet...I want to make Hip road trips my number one priority!!
Cheers

I think it was a little later than that...

This rule of thumb seems to work: The Hip take the stage 75 minutes after the opening band starts.

If you’re not worried about being in the front row then don’t worry about when the doors open, just find out when the opening band begins…

1) Opening Band: 9:00 – 9:35pm
2) Hip’s stage constructed: 9:35 – 9:55pm
3) Hip’s techs tune the gear: 9:55 – 10:10pm
4) Hip takes the stage at 10:15pm

One other note, brush up on your Clash knowledge. Not only have they covered several of their songs on this tour, they also play a few selections on the PA during the change over.

I agree!!! Great Show! This was our third show. We flew up from Florida. We gave up waiting for them to come that far south so we drove up to Atlanta for our first show. We decided to fly up to Boston and Hampton Beach (I am from the area originally). We are longtime fans after living in Canada from '93-'96 + I married a Canadian (with big hands  !!) When we got to Hampton, we were immediately greeted with "you were in front of us last night!" We met some great people!!!! My husband was wearing the Gilmour jersey.
I am trying to locate the very nice couple who took my picture with Rob. I remember faces better than names so am hoping it might be you!

Hey Guys

This was about my 35th show, and it was definitely up there. Gord is for sure getting some spunk back. There were a few moments that were pretty heavy:

The ones I can think of now are:

-Gord Tripping on the mic stand and almost falling off the (he caught himself on a monitor). Gord S. gave him a hand to get back on his feet. Gord D. jumped right back up and continued dancing.

-Gord. Staying on Stage after everyone else in teh band left and yelled mostly in-audible stuff in teh mic. I picked up "Music lovers - thank you, ______ - f**k you"

-Gord humping teh bass drum, and even cracking Johnny up.

Looking forward to the two dates that have just been announced for Quebec!

Ha, but it wasn’t 9pm now was it. :P

Just kidding, I didn’t think eatmecompletely was asking so he was prepared for the 2009 Hip show in Hampton Beach. I should have qualified this post by saying, “As an example, let’s say the opening band starts at 9pm…”.

The LA show last month started at 10:15pm and it looks like the NY show last night started at 10:16pm. I know Boston was a lot earlier than that since the Constantines hit the stage when the sun was still out. I'll take your word on Hampton Beach.

How about this: Find out when the doors open and add 135 minutes.

Thank you! Locked was the perfect ending to a great road trip.

I wonder why Wheat Kings was iffy; they’ve played it 15+ times on the tour? I appreciate Wheat Kings, but if they’re going to play a mellow track I would rather hear Flamenco, Are We Family, or Thompson Girl. With that said, this version of Wheat Kings was sick, the slide guitar and the lighting was perfect!
