Hip in Saskatoon
Never saw them at the Bess. The best Saskatoon Hip story involves my brother, who in 1989 helped The Hip get to Saskatoon when the van with all their gear broke down near Wynyard, Sk. My brother happened to have a truck, and was stopped for gas on his way from my hometown (Yorkton) to Saskatoon, so he offered to lug the gear to S'toon. The Hip were to play 2 gigs The Louis, where my brother in turn had his first 2 Hip experiences.
As it turns out he didn't see them again until 1997 (with me) at ARA in Camrose, Ab., where there were something like 30k people. Quite a difference from seeing them at the Louis in 89 where there were supposedly less than 100...
His next Hip experience will be the show at the Bess, along with his little brother (and 3 nephews), who are all traveling from outside Saskatchewan to come home and rock out with The Hip!
We are all very excited!!!
As it turn out that chance meeting in 89 that got my brother into The Hip, who in turn a few years later got me into them when he got me Road Apples and Up To Here for my 15th birthday...

Tomorrow is the day...leaving Regina around noon...should be another warm day, which means some pre-concert deck action is in order!!
Curious to see just how many tickets they sold for this venue...definitely have to get in early and catch the Sadies as well...been listening to their double live CD as well (thanks to Bauer's recomendation)...
Cheers!

This is not in order going off memory:
1. yer not the ocean
2. grace too
3: My Music At Work
4: It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
5: Family Band
6: Ahead By A Century
7: Courage (For Hugh Maclennan)
8: World Container
9. New Orleans
10. Bobcageon
11. In View
12. Fully Completely
13. Fireworks
14. Wheat Kings (Of course)
15. Kids Don't Get it
16. Blow
17. Lonely End of The Rink
18. Little Bones
The biggest surprise was no 10 minute version of meridian, this was a nice treat to take it out, but would have been nice if they played something in it's place like poets, springtime, etc.
Was a great setting for a summer show, best venue I have seen them in, 12th show.

Well...I'm at least a day behind schedule, but I better chime in with a little more commentary...actually spent an extra day in Saskatoon, and played 18 holes at Dakota Dunes...very nice course, but a little challenging with a strong wind and a slight hangover!!! However, definitely recommend the course as one of the best in Saskatchewan...OK, back to Wednesday's events...
Started the afternoon at O'Sheas roof top deck for a couple and then wandered down to the Bess around 6:00...it was my first time inside the Bess Gardens, and half to say it is a very cool place to watch a concert...surrounded by trees, a man-made bowl with sloped sitting areas on 3 sides, and then you have the hotel standing 8 storeys high in behind, so the whole area was nice and shady for the whole show (still warm though!)...and also really cool to see people sitting in their hotel rooms looking out the windows with an awesome view of the stage...didn't take any pictures but hopefully someone has some to post...pulled up some ground for the Sadies and they sounded great...it was at this point that it became evident the beer line was out of control...1000 people waiting for beer, and maybe 12 people handing them out doesn't compute very well!!!
The Hip took the stage around 8:30, which was a little earlier than I thought, not sure if there was a time limit in effect but I don't think they played much past 10:00. Gord was into it right away...the crowd was into it right away, the sound was dead on, and once you had a beer in your hand everything was perfect! I didn't get a copy of the setlist, but I think that "locked6" has it pretty close, I'm pretty sure they played Luv(sic) as well so possibly a 19 song set...
One highlight had to be a killer version of Courage, which included Gord turning over the vocals to the audience during the "no simple explananation" verse...Gord told the audience that we would sing the words, and he would then "paint the picture" base on those words...he was jumping around making wide strokes with his microphone/brush and it was just a really cool moment (I know that Bauer has the whole show on tape, so once again I'll be imposing on him for some favors!)...Family Band, World Container, Fully Completely, Wheat Kings were all highlights as well...a little disappointed in just a 2 song encore but the combination of Blow as the main closer, and Bones as the encore closer, definitely left the main stream fans very satisfied...of course I would have liked to hear something from the "non Yer Favorites" list, but I really can't complain...great night, great venue, great weather, great tunes...last comment is that Gordie might have set a record for sweat, his all white outfit was pretty much drenched by show's end...hopefully some pics show up from someone!
Cheers!

i was a victim of the aforementioned beer line up and all i have to say is WTF! we ended watching the first 5-6 songs from the line up but got pretty close when we got the brews. so choked i wasn`t up there for grace...but enough whining, it was a bloody cool show. loved when gord was trying to find bones. luv(sic) was definitely played. the timing through me off a bit as well, it was like i was an hour late all night.

jj and thedarkcanuck are right they did play luv (sic), sorry I missed it in the setlist...I wanted to get the list out ASAP because I know people attending shows soon after like to know what was played. I agree with the timing comment it was like they had to be off stage for 10:00 because of the hotel, yet the taste of saskatchewan band beside the hotel was still playing much later than that.

I'll be damned if I'm missing ANY of a Hip show to wait in line for ANYTHING, let alone a beer? I'm not a beer-drinker at all, nor do I pass judgement on those who are, but out of pure curiosity: what is it about needing a beer at a Hip show? Or a hockey game? Or missing part of the show that you paid good money for, waiting in line for said beer??

I just got home late last night after a busy but very rewarding trip to Saskatoon. I got some good pics and vids, and will hopefully post them in the next couple days, but for now, I need sleep...
