Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 01

Post by sean.bonner »

Welcome to the very first volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 01 runs from October 21st - November 3rd. Our very first selection has been made by kieffer!

And the show they selected is....

1996-10-06 - Burlington, Vermont
Memorial Auditorium

This show is freely available in the Hipbase Live Show Archive. The MP3s are in the 'Master-MP3 --> 1996' folder, lossless is in 'Master-Flac --> 1996'.

Here is what Hipbaser keiffer had to say about his selection:
Alright,

Happy to have been selected for the inaugural bootleg club. I decided to go with Burlington VT, 1996 - Oct - 06.

This is the second of two nights in Burlington, and the end of a US leg of the tour.

I stumbled upon this boot a few months ago while looking for shows recorded around the same time Live Between Us was captured. I blindly downloaded both Burlington shows without looking at their setlists. This show has since turned into one of my all time favourites and hopefully a great way to kick off this group.

"Tell your friends on the internet that hip chant sucks."

Gord's vocals sound great the entire show, the band is incredibly tight, and the recording is very clear.

Oh, and the setlist, WOW. It is heavy on tracks from TATHH - as this was the tour promoting that album. Beyond having some of my favourite deep cuts from that album (The Apartment Song, Let's Stay Engaged) it has Titanic Terrarium, Cordelia and Hiccups. There is some great stage banter from Gord, and hints of future songs. If that's not enough to entice you, there is also a 20 minute version of At the Hundredth Meridian mixed in the set as well.

Enjoy.
I'm excited to listen to this show! If you did not sign up to be part of the selection committee, you can still participate! please feel free to listen to the show, and join the discussion in this thread.

Well now I think I better change my show selection. It was also a Henhouse tour show. Looking forward to hearing this show.

Great song list! Good sound. First time I've heard any of these songs live. Apartment song, butts wigglin, everytime you go. Thanks much!

I've listened to the show once so far. Setlist wise, it seems like a very 'let's play whatever we want because its the last night of the tour' kinda setlist. Also, multi-night stands open up the setlist a little bit as well.

Has there ever been another show that ends with Let's Stay Engaged?

Also, that guy has balls stealing a horse from the RCMP

Unfortunately I was unable to attend any of these shows even though I live less than an hour away. I was 25 and my wife and I had just brought our son home from the hospital. He was born on September 18...so close to Fiddler's Green Day. He was a preemie and weighed only 4.5 pounds. He spent two weeks in the NICU before we were handed him and told good luck. 20 years later, he is a sophmore at college and I'm happy to share he is a Hip fan!

Looking forward to revisiting these recordings.

I can't put my finger on why, but the version of Butts Wigglin is so good

Loved the guy chiming in between songs..."did you catch the hockey game last night?" "I stole a horse from a mountie last week in Vancouver, make $22k at te next show." The sound is a C+ at best, but there are some great moments..."this is the most beautiful song we know" for Flemenco and Hiccups is always a welcome addition. 700 ft ceiling and Werewithal are both long forgotten additions. Highlight was the write-in call out for Arnold Palmer...weirde coincidence?

great choice - super crisp recording with the boys and Gordie in fine form!!
love the talk in between songs
love the hitler buffs crack at the start of springtime (one of my favorite songs and I heard God's favorite!!)
wicked gift shop with respect and hospitality
last minute of butts blows me away every time I hear it
abac, titanic, 700' ceiling, flamenco (the most beautiful song we know)
truly awesome epic 100th - one of the best versions ever with so much ranting and even an early Poets bit- Arnold Palmer for president- cookie factory - amazing!!
nautical building to madness
wherewithal wow!!
the encore hiccups - daredevil combo, scared and lets stay

What a great choice for 1st show of the club - gonna be hard to beat this one!!

Great show with a nice selection of 'deep cuts'. The Hip seemed to have dropped some of the Henhouse album cuts on the subsequent Canadian leg of the tour (or at least didn't play them as liberally at each show). Once your ears get used to it, the show sounds fine, better through headphones.

Nice first choice. Last show before the guys get a month off from a long US tour. Few rare songs, Everytime You Go, Butts Wigglin, Titanic Terrarium and Apartment Song.

Show scored a 71 on the rarity index (still a work in progress).

Got chills during Giftshop.
Butts Wigglin was also very good.
For some reason Hundredth Meridian didn't play for me on Google Drive, so i skipped it.
Apartment Song sounded unpolished live, but a great tune!
Crazy energy on Wherewithal to end the main set.
Hiccups was special.
Loved the ending of Let's Stay Engaged. Perfect way to say goodbye at the conclusion of a US tour!
