it was a really good show, the guys sounded tight....i went in expecting a "greatest hits" type of show and had no complaints with the setlist. the guys sign was a green sign that read fiddlers green---simple, but effective on this night. i was saying to my buddy just before the encore that the 2 songs that i wanted to hear were love is a first & grace,too.....funny how things work out sometimes :D

So they played 4 acoustic songs?
Yep. Fiddlers Green wasn't written down, but was added as an audience request.

Giggling with Gord

By Jeanette Stewart, The Star PhoenixAugust 5, 2009

"Gord Downie!" I text my roommate.

"I don't know who that is," is the reply.

"Tragically Hip. Canada's rock and roll poet laureate. His speaking voice is like thunderstorms on wheat fields."

Downie was walking down the Broadway Bridge two days before The Hip was set to play at the Saskatoon Ex, accompanied by Jim Bryson, a fellow Canadian rocker of equal depth but lesser fame.

I could leave them alone. But this isn't New York City where celebrities can live unnoticed.

"Are you Jim Bryson?" I ask the man in aviators. He takes them off and smiles. He is. We talk about people we both know, about my band, about the jam space he once played in, in Saskatoon.

"Are you, Gord Downie?" I ask in the same high-pitched voice with which I identify Bryson.

"No, I'm Jim Cuddy," he said smiling, without taking off his dark sunglasses. He's thin, like 99 per cent of famous people, wearing beige and a black hat.

"I interviewed you once over the phone," I say.

"How did I do?" he says.

"I giggled a lot. It was embarrassing," I say, giggling.

"Giggling is good," he said sympathetically.

We talk about The Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo, about the two bands "rumbling for pink slips." Whoever wins gets the bass player.

"I'm not really Jim Cuddy," Gord Downie says near the end of the bridge. "I gave that up a long time ago."

"I know," I say.

I stop to high five a friend and they cut down a path beside the bridge, waving goodbye. Escape.

"Enjoy Saskatoon!" I yell, cupping my hands together.

Bryson turns around, waving.

"Bye Jeanette," I swear he says.

"Are you going to hang out with them?" my roommate texts back.

No. That would be crazy.

So I take it this wasn't an 'evening with' type gig? From the setlist it looks like there was only 7 songs before the acoustic set. Not set break I assume?

No set break, they just took a few minutes to bring out the small drum kit and get things rearranged. It actually seemed like they had played more than 7 tunes at that point...I guess Depression Suite adds some time to the equation...
