It's connected to them meeting Jim Ellison who was the lead singer/songwriter for Material Issue. He killed himself in 1996. I'm sure some people already know this. Material Issue was a great power pop trio from suburban Chicago. Their first album, International Pop Overthrow, is great. I guess The Hip and Material Issue played in New York and they hung out a little bit. Gordon introduced this song in a weird way that others could probably quote but it was along the lines of them having met him and him dying. Obviously, the song says they weren't the best of friends, but it's an interesting way to talk about him because even though they didn't know him all that well, he was still someone they had met and he died.
As I mentioned earlier, Gordon also mentioned ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett who was found dead last week. The way he mentioned him, it seemed like they had met him too and spent some time with him. Gordon called him a great/beautiful person. I forget the exact phrase.
This was my 4th hip show and I thought it was pretty good. I especially liked hearing Thompson Girl acoustic.
I thought Gordie was saying something about A-chord, but wasn't sure. There were a lot of people taking pictures.
What really pissed me off on Wednesday was this girl kept bumping into me so she could take pictures of her boyfriend watching the show. I mean, she can take pics of him at home all day long, WTF?? she was more interested in him that the show.
All in all, Wednesday's show was way better, but collectively the 2 together were amazing, they did not repeat that many songs, only the ones they had to and I think I heard all the new songs except Country Day which I'm not too crazy about anyway. Anytime the hip do more than one show at the same venue, I recommend going to both/all since each show is so different and they have so many songs, you get a much better experience.

Thanks for that; I knew it had something to do with Jim Ellison obviously but didn't know much about his band. No doubt that stories like this is what makes the Hip what they are.
