Yeah. I might need to endure one more outdoor show. The amount of jackassery bound to show up at a Canada Day weekend Hip show does not bode well, however.
I feel your pain. After Edmonton last summer I swore that I'd never go to another outdoor Hip show in Canada again, but for that lineup I'd probably have to make an exception.
Yeah, I was at that show. And, wanting a good view, I was up there in the middle of it. It was manageable for most of the show. But by the end of the main set I was getting elbowed like I was in the corner with Gordie Howe. Made my way back to the sound booth for the encore. It was much better. I vowed theatre shows from there on out. However, seeing Death Cab, the New Pornographers, and the Hip on the same day is pretty tempting. Plus, I like Niagara-on-the-Lake. Back when I lived in Thorold, I volunteered two summers at Fort George.

When I was 18 or 19, I enjoyed the hell out of crowd surfing and being up in the pit, but at 37 I just can't do that crap anymore. Part of it is the "getting older" thing of course, and I've really mellowed out over the years when it comes to concert-going. But I find people have gotten really out of hand lately. You know it's bad when Gord is up there pissed off, begging and pleading for the crowd to stop acting like morons. I've been to a few festival-type Hip shows in the U.S. over the years, and it's always a totally different vibe down there. So much more relaxed, easy going and enjoyable. One of my favorite Hip shows of all time was the High Sierra festival back in '98 just north of San Francisco. The crowd was so awesome and well behaved, and everybody had a really wonderful time. By comparison, the outdoor Hip shows in Canada always seem to have this dreadful, foreboding, dangerous vibe to them. Even before the Hip take the stage, you just know that rampant drunken douchebaggery is going to ensue, and that people are going to get hurt. I stayed out of it at the Edmonton show and just hung out by the soundboard, and it was much better back there. But you still feel the negative vibes coming from the front, and from Gord himself.

Agreed! Shit, I'm 25 and I was sick of that bullshit like 4 years ago. I will never ever got to another outdoor festival type show in Canada ever again. I don't care if John Bonham was reincarnated and Zeppelin got back together. Even indoor g.a. Hip shows are dreadful. I remember having to contend with so many drunk brooding dickheads at the Phoneix shows in T.O. years ago. It might be a "Hip" fan thing, I use that term loosely because most of these idiots, are frat boy, pining for the hits, type morons.

I was at Bonnaroo last year, and didn't really know what to expect, but it was one of the most pleasant crowd experiences of my entire life. Every single person there, that I saw, was peaceful and respectful. I think the people who are drunk violent shitheads at shows are people that aren't really music fans, just people who wanna get hammered and cheer when Courage or Blow at High Doe are played. True music fans are never a problem and are usually always respectful.

I have also found the crowds at general admission shows to be wound pretty tight too. Back in the early to mid 90s it seemed the entire crowd was one moving element. Everybody laughed and jumped around and just enjoyed the experience of being in a huge crowd and lovin the music. I find now days people find a spot and god forbid your toe goes in that spot, they get mad and push around.
example.
1 ) Bobcageyon, we were up front probably about 20 people back from the stage and right at the centre. Some girl infront of my 14 year old son just leans back and almost pushes him right to the ground and turns around yelling at him. I had to get in her face and her friends face and explain to her that I have been standing there right beside him and he has not even moved and its probably the fact that she smoked 3 joints and drank a few drinks and had a huge back pack on that was stuffed. That she was kind of in a place where she should not be. I told her my son had just gotten a cast off of his arm the day before and she had better not push him again. She ended up leaving half way thru the Hip set as she was so fucked up she could hardly stand.

2 ) Downsview Park. My wife and I went and left the kids home for this show. So we end up at basically the same spot as we did in Bobcageyon, front centre about 20 people back. We are standing there and the crowd is moving around during Weezer and were all getting shoved around, I think its fun the crowd is having a good time, then the lady in front of me turns around and YELLS "STOP PUSHING ME" !!!! I looked at her and her husband and said " If you dont want to be pushed around why are you standing in the front of the stage in a crowd this big, mabey you should go sit at the back"
Its those kind of people that get me mad sometimes. I mean just fuckin chill out, its a rock concert, a huge crowd , there will be body contact, if you dont like it get to the back stupid.

3 ) Downsview again. So a few girls are showing their boobs, well 5 guys behind me are taunting 2 girls that are NOT showing their boobs, they yell out " show us your fuckin tits you ugly bitch" and " hey you slut show us your tits" I mean really!!!!!!!! Such douchbags. They way you get a girl to flash her boobs is clap your hands and cheer YEAAAAAAAAA and smile and be happy.

Now that I have spent $300 on tickets and $100 on a hotel. They had better NOT announce a show in the Kitchener Waterloo Cambridge area.

If I still lived in the area, I'd have offered up my place as somewhere for people to crash. But alas, I just happen to be in the neighbourhood from Alberta that weekend visiting family. If you have a car, I'd recommend getting a hotel in St. Catharines and driving in. All the hotels in NOTL are ridiculously expensive. Everything in NOTL is ridiculously expensive. I imagine they'll open up the big parking lot at Fort George for this show. That said, parking will definitely be hard to come by.

This one is pretty close and much cheaper than NOTL bed and breakfasts.
