Anyone care to share how the Arkells have been doing?

The Tragically Hip at the ISC
JANUARY 20, 2013
Mike Davies, Editor-in-Chief

Gordie and the boys from Kingston took everyone who packed into the Interior Savings Centre (ISC) on Jan. 13 for a tour of the Tragically Hip’s long musical history.

The Hip, as they are simply known, have been touring hard for almost 30 years. They stopped periodically, but just long enough to record 12 studio albums along the way. It is impossible to say whether it is the music or the show that has turned them into the Canadian rock icons they’ve become over time, but based on the ISC performance, one likely can’t be separated from the other once you’ve seen it.

Whether riding around the stage in an imaginary gondola using his microphone stand as the pole, or putting on some strange Kabuki-type theatre performance that only he can understand — with characters like Handkerchief, Vest and Hat — front man Gord Downie put off a contagious energy and just straight up exuded fun.

Playing just the right blend of old classics and new releases, The Hip seemingly touched on something from all 12 of those studio constructions, and though some of the choices — “It Can’t Be Nashville Every Night” was a strange choice from In Between Evolution, for example — overall, they gave both long-time fans and those who may be new to their music something to sing along to.

Not that you’d try if you’ve been a fan of the band for long. Downie is known for his spontaneity and often changes the words of his music on the fly — to the point that even his band doesn’t seem to know what’s going on at times. Playing together for that long, though, you can tell the rest of the crew is used to it, and they treat the stage more like a jam space than a venue for performance.

The Arkells, who visited TRU campus as part of the Tunes Against Tuition show during the fall 2012 semester, looked perfectly at home to a stadium full of fans eagerly awaiting the legends backstage, and engaged the audience with a selection of their own repertoire for a solid half-hour — likely sending many to iTunes (or wherever they get their music) immediately following the show. They are clearly better than their radio-aired singles would suggest.

While the sound quality at the ISC is less than exceptional, The Tragically Hip made up for it with their energy, camaraderie and well-earned status as Canadian icons — especially for fans who have heard decades of poor-sounding bootlegs of their shows.

Great show as always. Arkells were real good. Had to miss the last half of their set so that I had drinks for The Hip though. lol

Was quite pleased with the crowd vibe. Everyone was excited and friendly and I didnt see many sitters. 5th row on the floor was great fun; lots of singing and dancing. Thanks Kamloops for a fun time!

Song highlights for me were Fiddler's, 50Mish, Inch An Hour, notably all from the encore. The whole encore was great

long live das hips

Chatted with seth for a while before the show while we were waiting to get in and the show was recorded, as was Cranbrook night before. He had no issues getting his gear in other than having to wait til the rest of the people got in at 7 and not during the pre-entry lol The staff I saw and heard interacting with him were quite pleasant about it and appeared pretty helpful, with some of the lessers looking somewhat mystified. Didnt see him after the show to ask how recording went. Saw him setting up at the soundboard at the beginning so I assume things went well. Was neat chatting with him. Probably be a while before anything ready though.

Yup, had a great time indeed! I nailed the recording again this night. So the last two nights have been covered and got lucky enough to have great recordings of both times. Huge thanks go out to the crew (especially sound engineer, John) for giving me a footprint inside the SBD cage and smoothing things over with an over-zealous security gestapo agent. Makes a huge difference being able to raise my mics up 10 feet. These recordings along with my upcoming Red Deer & Edmonton captures will be released first on Hipbase...please be patient as it will certainly be a few weeks before I get them out.

The first night I found the Arkells to be good but somewhat underwhelming. I think they're growing on me though as I enjoyed their show in Kamloops.

Peace.

I had a lot of fun at this show, had fantastic seats. Front row center on the aisle break in the middle. Found the crowd in row two a little sedate, STANDING there, doing nothing at times. I was rippin it up with my wife, girl/guy behind us were great energy, guy beside us was on something he said was "magically delicious" if you catch his drift.

The Arkells were really fun. My first exposure to them. I thought they did great. They have a really cool line in a song "This campfire cant go on forever, the Hip only have so many songs"
They also covered Ohio at one point, so they are showing respect to the big guys. Very energetic job tyring to get the crowd into. Perfect warmup act, they did great, good tunes.

Morning Moon, Rink , 50Cap, Nashville, Greasy and every other song they played were highlights. I had to break up a fight halfway through the show, a guy was flat on his back with a dude crouched down over him with his arm cocked and I ran over and stopped the pummeling. This was in the second row center. Security intervened after that. Killed the vibe in the front for a couple of songs for sure.

Snagged a setlist, Sinclairs or Bakers. Roadie grabbed it for me, also got a pick.

If you are interested I have my recap footage here.

There are links to skip my parts and just get to the tunes...enjoy.
