Budweiser Gardens?

Edit: Nevermind, I see the other thread now. Not a bad July for the folks in London, as this is a week after Pearl Jam play there...

Does anyone have the link for the July 25th Harris Park - Rock The Park pre-sale on Feb. 14th? I'm not seeing link/details, or maybe I'm blind.

Maybe we will see you there Sarah. We purchased VIP tickets for this one. I believe the extra money for those type of tickets will be worth it as long as the promoters didn't change the venue set up from the last Rock the Park I attended. Last time the right half of the stage, at the front, was reserved for VIPs.

Now I'm praying for good weather. The last Rock the Park I attended with the Stone Temple Pilots headlining was a torrential downpour just after OLP finished.

Phew. Expecting something like this as the setlist, I decided the travel time wasn't worth it for a GA show on a weeknight ,and bailed somewhere when I was already at 30mins just trying to get near the highway.

Looking forward to your review though Hugh....always a great read.

Wow, what a shocker of a setlist. Never could have predicted that in a million years.

First appearance of The Lookahead in a while, if I'm not mistaken...

Damn, you know The Hip are in trouble when even thompson girl turns the car around so she will not have to hear the same repetitive setlist again.

My wife and I arrived at Harris Park in London about half way through The Trews set. It was the first time I have seen this band play and they were fun to watch with some good songs. They had good fan participation as the band encouraged the crowd to sing along with them. Gord Sinclair, who produced The Trews latest album, came out on stage early to perform Already There (?) with the group.

We had VIP Standing room tickets which provided us close access to the stage. We were in my favorite spot between Gord S. and Robbie on the right side of the stage about 5 rows of people back from the front barrier. Barriers separated the VIP section from the general admission side and there was a small corridor down the center of the crowd where security could roam back and forth and have access to a large portion of the fans in the front or back of the viewing area. Therefore, GA had access to the left side of the stage and VIP had access to the right. The VIP Standing & tables were sold out and the general admission side was filled with with rowdy, chanting fans.

I went into the show familiar with the set The Hip had played at previous shows this summer. I had not seen the band play since November 2012 and I was pumped up and excited to see them play again. Gord D was pretty calm and in control during most of the show. He did rage back and forth from one side of the stage to the other a few times, but for the majority of the show he was at center stage. I enjoyed Gord's song delivery which was also controlled and sung with energy, with screaming only on parts where Gord wanted to provide emphasis. I love watching Johnnie Fay play drums. He really puts everything into it. I also like the professionalism between Robbie, Paul and Gord S. They play together so tightly. A fan can watch them look to each other during the songs for visual cues they give to each other as they graciously share the spotlight between them.

As was mentioned, the set list was pretty basic and straight forward. I knew what I was getting when I arrived and I was not disappointed. Nor did it seem were the rest of the fans, as I heard many say they enjoyed themselves as the crowd cleared at the end of the show. I have to disagree with the comment that The Hip are in trouble. The show was well attended and the largest crowd response came from the bands most well known and often repeated songs. No matter how many times I hear these songs, I still enjoy how they make me feel hearing them live. During the encore, the band had cameras placed on there bodies and directly above Johnnie's drum kit to give a POV sight line. Robbie was wearing an arm band over his right bicep with a camera attached to it which was pointing down at his guitar as he played. I didn't look to the screens at the side stage to see the effect.

My wife and I had passes to the after show meet and greet along with about 75 other fans in a tent in the backstage area. The Hip provided beer, pop and water as fans spoke with Robbie, Gord S. and Johnnie. I met Max Montalvo who filmed The Lookahead video there. He and his video colleague Fernando, who also worked on the same video, were interesting to speak with. We waited till most of the people were gone to speak with Robbie. He invited us back to The Hip's backstage house trailer for a beer as final preparations were made to vacate the concert site.

We were chit-chatting with Rob as other members of the band, crew and management walked in and out of the trailer. I said hello to Paul, but I didn't speak with him. While my wife continued to talk with Rob, Gord D walked in and began to pack his travel bag with his clothes. I crossed the small room to speak with him as he packed. I asked him about one of my favorite songs he wrote, Every Irrelevance. In particular, I wanted to know about his performance of that song on a CBC show I think Gord said was called Swinging on a Star. I have a recording of it. He remembered performing on the show, but little else about it, as I wanted to know what band played with him. At first he thought it was guys from The Hip and I knew it wasn't. Then he thought it was Dale Morningstar. According to The Hip Museum, it was The Rheostatics. I told Gord how I loved the theramin's eerie sound which added to the moodiness of his lyrics and delivery.

While Gord didn't remember much of that performance, he did remember the song fondly, as his face lit up when I mentioned it and he said, "That was one of my very first attempts at songwriting". I asked Gord why The Hip never recorded the song and Robbie, who overheard our conversation, chimed in it was under consideration for inclusion on an album, but it didn't make the cut. Soon after the tour bus was loading and we said good bye.

We returned to our hotel room and woke up early to make the return trip to Detroit at 7am, as my wife had to work at 11am. We were both hung over, but she made it to work and I completed my yard work at home before collapsing. As I get older, it is hard to recover from these late nights, but I still enjoy them!
