That's quite an introduction. Welcome!gregory peck fan wrote:My name is Robin, and I'd like to be the first to wish you and yours a Happy Canada Day. Only 31 more shopping days to go!
Sometime in the late 90's I was introduced to Day for Night, and became obsessed with Inevitability of Death. I didn't know much about the Hip at the time, and always imagined the lead singer to be a big fat guy. Nevertheless, that album became a staple in my musical diet, and went with me everywhere.
Eventually I realized this band had more albums, all equally as brilliant as DFN, and that the lead singer was in fact a very trim and handsome man named Gord. Thus began my plunge over the Falls into Hip mania. I'm also somewhat bonkers for Pearl Jam, Badly Drawn Boy, Skip Whistle and the Doo-Dads, etc., but most have crept into the periphery to make way for more Hip. I'm okay with that, even if the other passengers in my car are not. Is it not a universal rule that the driver always picks the music?
Last Saturday I took a few blows from the Sasquatch! hailstorm to see our boys for the fourth time. It was tremendous. I advise all of you to attend a show in severe weather conditions, but don't leave home without an insulating garbage bag. It also protects you from Gord sweat, unless you're the kind of fan who enjoys that. If you are, I can only aspire to reach your level of devotion.
I was also at That Night in Toronto, oblivious to the fact that they were filming the DVD until I saw the cameras thrashing madly around the stage. I met some fans at a bar just before, where we got plowed on Molsen Canadian and stumbled down the block just in time for the first song. I believe I cried out "My people!" when I saw the lights shine on the sold-out crowd in the ACC. But then again, I was fairly drunk and could have been saying that to my hot dog.
And let's not forget the 2004 show at the Fillmore in San Francisco. They played a great Lake Fever...I get the chills every time Gord says "screen door." The nice men at the exit gave away posters that night, just like they used to do when you ordered Scholastic books in elementary school. I was quite cheerful about that and went right out to buy a mailing tube for $3.99 at the UPS store so I could safely transport it home.
My first show was Edgefest 2003, the "Last Bash" in Barrie. I went back to Barrie to have dinner with a friend a few weeks ago, and was strangely compelled to start singing Fire in the Hole. However, the other patrons at the restaurant did not look like the type who enjoyed listening to a strange American girl with a poor singing voice, so I bit my tongue and chewed my pasta instead. Man, that was great pasta...mushrooms and chicken in a creamy sauce...mmm...
Enough about the canoes. I live in the states, but am slowly migrating north. My buddies in Ontario say I'm more Canadian than American, which is quite a compliment. I'll be at the Fort York show in Toronto next month. You'll recognize me by my Adidas Gazelles, which are now a bit destroyed from the hail.
I have to go watch The Snorks now. Thanks for listening.
No kidding? I commend your mum for choosing this as her first show...she must be one hip chick. Which day are you going? I may be looking for a friendly face on June 24...I have two tickets but (long story) may only use one.MAverick wrote:See you there. I'm bringing my parents, who are in their late sixties. Welcome!!girthy69 wrote:Gidday everyone. I have been lurking around here for a while now, and I just decided to start posting.
I have been a Hip fan since mid 1990s. My first Hip concert was the Woodstock-esque ARA show in Ottawa in '95.
Since that time, I have spent a lot of money on concerts and merch, but it's worth it, right? Some memorable shows include the Kingston Iron Horse show (getting up at 5 to drive in and lineup for tickets, then spending the rest of the day looking for fake IDs to get into the show later that night) and a couple trips down to Syracuse. Gotta love the Landmark.
I currently live in Kingston and work as a reporter in Gananoque. I still get excited whenever I see Rob on the street.
All the best, hope to get to know you all better. Looking forward to the Belleville show.
