Is anyone with the knowhow/time/effort willing/able to start a bit torrent site for bootlegs? It seems to me to be an untapped resource which would allow everyone to get a piece of the action, not just 5 users at a time, as is found on FTPs (though I still love them)....

For anyone who is unfamiliar with bit torrent, check out http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/ for details.

I have only used this a couple of times but was impressed and think it would be a great idea for trading and accessing live music, and seems easier then ftp. I wouldn't have the time at the moment to be able to look into how to set it up but in a month I go back to school, and then I would have lots of time to try and figure it out. But I think it would be a great idea.

bit torrent is a resource hog, tho. big time.

and if you are trying to get a show downloaded and no one has any windows open or the seed is no longer available, you are SOL.

personally, i think we are better off getting some more FTP's setup.

that is a very good point, and more ftp is always good.

bit torrent works great in the world of DMB, etc, because there are loads of tapers/traders/etc. with the much smaller, but dedicated, fanbase that we are dealing with, bit torrent would probably be more of a pain in the ass than anything else.

more FTP's however, are a great idea.

i have contemplated for a long time the idea of a member driven FTP site, that would ensure high speeds, and loads of storage space. ie: people pay a small membership fee - which covers the cost of the high speed dedicated connection - and in return gain access to a high speed, organized FTP site via personal password.

any thoughts, anyone?

BT works just "ok" in the dmb community. the problem is that once a show isn't seeded anymore you get people posting messages like "please open your windows for xxxxx show".

with our small group here, ftp's are the way to go. then you don't run into that problem.

I think we need to push again and get an answer from the Hip about archive.org. Its free, lossless based and for trader friendly bands. Its quick, I have been hitting 75-300k on cable! They currently have almost 300 artists and almost 6000 shows. The only thing we need to do is get an answer from the boys allowing it to be done. I believe Lance and a few others have tried in the past, but I have not heard any answers. With permission, we can get everybody to upload their stuff. Another great thing about it is that Archive.org & etree have standards that ALL shows must meet.
